Story Snapshot

  • Bethel Police Chief Chad Essert faces 70 felony sex counts involving a former student between 2005 and 2010.
  • Prosecutors say the alleged abuse happened while he taught at Scarlet Oaks and led a Young Marines youth program.
  • Essert was arrested in Florida and is jailed there while he waits to be sent back to Ohio.
  • The indictment is based on a sealed grand jury process, and Essert is legally presumed innocent until proven guilty.

Ohio Police Chief Hit With 70-Count Sex Crime Indictment

Clermont County officials in Ohio announced that Bethel Police Chief Chad Essert has been indicted on seventy felony charges after a grand jury review.[1] The indictment includes fifty-six counts of sexual battery and fourteen counts of unlawful sexual conduct with a minor, all listed as third-degree felonies.[1] Prosecutors say the alleged crimes took place between 2005 and 2010, when Essert was an instructor in a Young Marines youth program and a teacher at Scarlet Oaks in Sharonville, Ohio.[1][4]

Authorities state that the victim was a student of Essert during that time period, and that the alleged abuse occurred at several locations in both Clermont County and nearby Hamilton County.[1][4] If a jury later finds him guilty on every charge, Essert could face a maximum sentence of two hundred eighty years in prison, a number that shows how seriously Ohio law treats abuse of minors and abuse of public trust.[1][4] At this stage, these remain allegations, not proven facts in a courtroom.

Arrest in Florida and What Happens Next

After the grand jury handed down the indictment on June 11, law enforcement tracked Essert to Seminole, Florida.[1][4] The Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office Tactical Investigations Section arrested him around 7 p.m. that evening without incident and booked him into the Pinellas County Jail, where he is still being held.[1][4] Officials say he is awaiting extradition back to Ohio, where he will face the charges in Clermont County court and have the chance to enter a plea and seek bond.

Local and national media have highlighted that the indictment is based on alleged conduct from more than fifteen years ago, raising questions about timing and legal limits.[4] A legal expert told reporters that Ohio law gives more time for prosecutors to bring charges when the accused is a public servant, which can extend the statute of limitations in cases like this.[5] The detailed legal arguments on timing will likely show up later in court filings, and the defense can still challenge this theory when the case moves forward.

Sealed Grand Jury, Limited Evidence in Public, and Presumption of Innocence

Like many sensitive sex crime cases, especially those involving a minor and an authority figure, this prosecution began in a closed grand jury room, not an open trial.[1] A grand jury process is one-sided by design: prosecutors present their version of events, and defense lawyers usually are not in the room to push back or cross-examine.[5] That means the public now sees a long list of charges but does not yet see the underlying proof such as sworn testimony, documents, or any forensic evidence.

Officials have stressed that this new case is independent of a separate internal investigation earlier in 2026 into sexual harassment claims by a subordinate, which ended with no criminal charges.[1] That earlier finding does not clear or convict Essert in the current matter, and it should not be confused with the student-focused allegations now at issue. For now, the community must hold two ideas at once: the charges are extremely serious, and under the United States Constitution Essert is presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a public trial.
