Trump Declares He Will Impose Tariffs On China In Second Term

During an appearance on Fox News, former president and current GOP primary frontrunner Donald Trump declared that he would impose tariffs on China in his second term in the White House.

If he wins this year’s presidential election, Trump plans to target communist China’s exports, telling Fox News Channel’s “Sunday Morning Futures” host Maria Bartiromo that he would impose tariffs exceeding 60%.

“We have to do it,” Trump said in the interview aired on Sunday. “I mean, look, the stock market almost crashed when it was announced.”

Bartiromo then asked about a Washington Post report claiming that Trump was considering imposing 60% tariffs on Chinese goods, to which the former president responded that the tariffs would likely be higher.

“No, I would say maybe it’s going to be more than that,” he said.

In his first term, Trump imposed significant tariffs on hundreds of billions of dollars worth of Chinese goods during the ongoing trade war. While President Joe Biden has revoked many of Trump’s policies, he did end up keeping many of the tariffs in place — even adding new restrictions prohibiting the U.S. from importing advanced semiconductors and the equipment used to make them.

Trump went on to dismiss the notion of beginning another trade war with China, telling Bartiromo: “It’s not a trade war. I did great with China with everything.”

He then complimented Chinese President Xi Jinping — something Trump is widely known for, as he often speaks positively about adversaries in an effort to be diplomatic.

“I want China to do great, I do. And I like President Xi a lot. He was a very good friend of mine during my term,” he said.

During the same interview, Trump also spoke out about President Joe Biden’s border crisis and the staggering number of Chinese illegal aliens crossing the U.S.-Mexico border.

“It’s not sustainable… It’s not just South America. It’s from Africa, from Asia, from all over the world,” he said, adding: “From China there were 28,000 people in the last few months — 28,000! What’s he doing, building an army? And they were mostly men, almost all men from the age of 18 to 25. So what’s that all about?”
