Biden Admin Promotes Pandemic-Style Lockdowns To Save Environment

Although climate alarmists have repeatedly been wrong in their forecasts of world-ending apocalypses, there appears to be no end to the restrictions that leftists will endorse in the name of protecting the environment.

In the wake of widespread lockdowns implemented by many of the same politicians during the COVID-19 pandemic, President Joe Biden has now apparently found a reason to restrict the free movement of Americans indefinitely.

According to a recently unveiled plan by the Environmental Protection Agency, the Department of Energy, the Department of Transportation, and the Department of Housing and Urban Development, keeping people in their homes is a surefire way to combat the ostensible impact of climate change.

The ambitious plan calls for the elimination of “nearly all greenhouse gas emissions” from transportation by 2050. Much of that, the agencies predict, will come from the prohibition of gas-powered vehicles.

Beyond those measures, however, bureaucrats are also pushing to slash the number of “commuting miles” that Americans drive.

Promoting “an increase in remote work and virtual engagements,” the agencies extol the perceived “convenience” that the plan will deliver by essentially compelling people to remain in their homes.

“The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted major opportunities for telework, with some studies showing the possibility of 10 percent long-term reduction in annual vehicle miles traveled,” the agencies reported.

Furthermore, the plan calls for “remote access” to medical services and even education, despite mounting evidence that virtual classes were detrimental to the development of children during the pandemic lockdowns.

Far-left activists have previously endorsed similar efforts after taking cues from the heavy-handed response to COVID-19, but the latest move by the Biden administration is eliciting sharp criticism — particularly from the small-business community.

As Job Creators Network President Alfredo Ortiz explained, a push to keep people at home would negatively impact countless entrepreneurs and their employees just as it did during the peak of the pandemic.

“Once again, the Biden administration is blindly pursuing a ‘green’ agenda despite the unintended consequences it poses to the economy and, more specifically, small businesses,” he said. “Small businesses struggled to survive the pandemic and we don’t need to return to a similar environment in which in-person consumer demand is severely compromised.”
