Former President Barack Obama reportedly held two different private meetings with his former vice president, President Joe Biden, to discuss his deep concerns about Biden potentially losing reelection to his chief rival, former president and presumptive Republican nominee Donald Trump.

A report from TIME Magazine revealed that, according to sources familiar with the meetings, Obama met with Biden in June 2023 — where he reportedly warned him that he needed to take on a more aggressive approach to his campaign against Trump.

The insider source also told the outlet that Obama had emphasized that it was necessary for Biden to push the message that the 2024 election was a referendum on Trump, rather than focusing on his own agenda. This is unsurprising considering the fact that Biden’s tenure in office has seen supply chain crises, skyrocketing inflation, a historic border crisis, a cost of living crisis and so much more. If Biden were to campaign on his agenda, polls show that Americans are extremely dissatisfied with the results of “Bidenomics.” Focusing on Trump is Biden’s best path forward, as the Democrats’ ability to smear Trump with ease thanks to the mainstream media will help Biden avoid making this election a referendum on his presidency.

After the June 2023 meeting did not lead to any improvements from Biden, Obama reportedly returned to the White House in December 2023 to reiterate his concerns.

According to TIME Magazine, “He expressed concern the re-election campaign was behind schedule in building out its field operations, and bottlenecked by Biden’s insistence on relying upon an insular group of advisers clustered in the West Wing, according to the same Democratic insider.”

The inside source went on to explain that Obama warned Biden that without decisive action, Trump would win key battleground states that Biden had narrowly won in 2020.

This news comes as Biden’s poll numbers have continued to drop, indicating that the president is poised to lose in November. According to the RealClearPolitics average, Biden’s average approval rating is just 40.1%, while his disapproval rating has risen to 56.4%. Many other polls have shown that Trump is leading Biden nationally and in key swing states, with a significant lead in the battleground states of Arizona, Nevada, Georgia and Michigan.

Like Obama, Democrat strategists have repeatedly warned Biden that his typical method of running his campaigns will not be enough to win in November.
“This is how he’s always run his campaigns. He and his insiders know better. Last time, it worked, so he didn’t learn any of the lessons, and thinks he can run 2020 again,” one Democratic strategist who worked with Biden told TIME Magazine.
