Early Tuesday morning, the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore was suddenly destroyed when the Dali, a cargo ship under a Singapore flag, collided with the bridge’s support columns. The collision caused virtually the entire bridge to plunge into the cold waters dozens of feet below. An extensive search and rescue operation involving first responders from all around the city and region began immediately.

The incident occurred at approximately 1:50 a.m., when the vessel, headed to Sri Lanka and managed by Synergy Marine Group, lost power and inadvertently steered into one of the bridge’s critical supports. This disaster ignited a series of urgent actions from local to federal levels. Maryland Gov. Wes Moore (D) immediately declared a state of emergency and began coordinating with various state and federal agencies to manage the crisis.

The Baltimore Fire Department, led by Chief James Wallace, has been at the forefront of the rescue efforts. He indicated there were multiple vehicles on the bridge at the time of the collapse. An unknown number of people were immediately plunged into the frigid waters below. Reports indicated that by late Tuesday morning, two individuals were rescued from the water, with one hospitalized in critical condition. At the time, frantic search and rescue work was underway to locate and assist what was thought to be up to 20 persons still in the bay.

The impact of this calamity extends beyond immediate safety concerns. The bridge normally sees around 34,000 vehicles cross each day. The disruption to routine traffic and transportation in and around Baltimore is certain to have significant and long-standing economic repercussions on the Eastern seaboard. The bridge has long had a critical role in the commerce that is conducted at one of America’s busiest harbors.

Initial investigations suggest that the Dali experienced a loss of power, leading to the catastrophic collision. The sequence of events captured on social media paints a harrowing picture of the moments leading up to the bridge’s partial destruction. Officials, including the National Transportation Safety Board and Sen. Ben Cardin (D-MD), are probing the incident, emphasizing the ship’s apparent power failure.

Gov. Moore praised the quick-thinking actions of Maryland Transportation Authority Police, who, upon receiving a mayday call from the ship, worked to prevent further vehicles from entering the bridge. As crews worked as quickly as possible to prevent further loss of life, the governor stressed that the collision was clearly a “mass casualty event.”

The repercussions of this disaster are far-reaching. In addition to the human toll and the direct impact on Baltimore’s infrastructure, the collapse raises questions about the safety and maintenance of America’s aging bridges.
