Nina Jankowicz, once at the helm of the disbanded Disinformation Governance Board under the Department of Homeland Security, has surfaced again with a purportedly bipartisan initiative. This time, it’s the American Sunlight Project — co-founded with an assembly of ex-federal employees and social media executives. The group claims to battle disinformation threats as the 2024 elections approach. Yet, their primary target seems to be silencing conservative voices under the guise of “defending democracy.”

The project asserts it will uncover the “infrastructure and funding” behind what it unilaterally sees as disinformation campaigns. “Everyone who contributes to disinformation — from those who produce it to those who fund it to those who peddle it in the halls of Congress — will be investigated and exposed,” the project announced on the X platform, formerly known as Twitter.

The nonprofit has directly attacked Republican leaders, accusing them of using government resources to hinder their work. They equate these actions to McCarthyism, demanding an end to what they call the amplification of “baseless conspiracy theories.” The formation of the American Sunlight Project by Jankowicz is less a noble fight against disinformation and more a continuation of the Biden administration’s troubling trend toward controlling narrative under the pretense of security.

Amazingly, the project continues to travel on the wholly discredited political hoax that President Trump conspired with the Russian government to win the 2016 election. Jankowicz sent a letter to congressional leaders who have “done little to improve the health of our information environment” throughout all of the Trump and Biden administration years, directly claiming the “Russian interference” has not been investigated. She continued, “Since April 2022, extremists have been running a campaign to undermine critical disinformation research ahead of the 2024 election and beyond,” describing the situation as the “greatest threat to freedom of expression” in more than 60 years.

This initiative, cloaked in the language of democracy and bipartisan effort, poses a significant threat to free expression. By targeting a so-called disinformation infrastructure led purportedly by conservatives, Jankowicz and her colleagues aim not just to expose but also to suppress opposition voices. The refusal to disclose donors while claiming a transparent operation adds a layer of irony that should not go unnoticed.

The American Sunlight Project’s invasive crusade looks to be bent on weaponizing the fear of disinformation to curb comments and criticism of the establishment. With Election Day approaching, efforts to censor and chill free speech — especially on political issues — are sure to work to the benefit of establishment politicians. The need for America First activists to be vigilant has never been greater.
