Biden Claims Debate Performance Won Over Undecided Voters Despite Criticism
President Joe Biden has asserted that his recent debate performance against former President Donald Trump somehow swayed undecided voters in his favor, despite significant criticism. During a fundraiser at New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy’s home, Biden conceded that his performance was lackluster but insisted it helped him gain support.
“I didn’t have a great night, but I’m going to be fighting harder,” Biden told donors. “Research during the debate shows us converting more undecided voters than Trump did, in large part because of his conduct on Jan. 6. People remember the bad things during his presidency.”
This statement has raised eyebrows, especially considering the harsh reviews from various media outlets and political analysts. The New York Times editorial board even suggested that Biden should consider stepping down, citing his inability to effectively communicate his plans for a second term and his struggles to counter Trump’s provocations.
“The president appeared on Thursday night as the shadow of a great public servant. He struggled to explain what he would accomplish in a second term,” the editorial board wrote. Despite their critique, they reiterated that they would still support Biden over Trump if it came down to a choice between the two.
Comedian Bill Maher also weighed in, stating, “Trump told lie after lie. He never would have gotten away with that if Joe Biden was there.” He humorously added, “I don’t want to say he s*** the bed, but his new Secret Service name is Amber Heard,” referencing an infamous incident involving the actress.
Despite the criticism, Biden’s campaign maintains that the debate performance had a positive impact on undecided voters. Democratic National Committee Chairman Jaime Harrison dismissed much of the concern as media-driven, saying that within the party, particularly among Black voters, there is strong support for Biden.
“What I have seen is that galvanization, particularly in the Black community,” Harrison told MSNBC host Al Sharpton. “Joe Biden has always had our back, and we’re going to have his.”
Biden’s insistence on the positive outcome of the debate comes amid ongoing discussions about his ability to lead the country for another term. His campaign continues to focus on rallying support and addressing the concerns raised by his performance.
