Chinese Cyber Operations Raise Alarm As US Cybersecurity Officials Warn Of Future Attacks

U.S. officials are sounding the alarm about the growing threat of Chinese cyber operations targeting critical infrastructure in the United States. Morgan Adamski, executive director of U.S. Cyber Command, revealed on Friday that Chinese hackers are positioning themselves in key IT networks, with the potential to carry out disruptive attacks should tensions between the two countries escalate.

Speaking at the Cyberwarcon security conference in Arlington, Virginia, Adamski emphasized that Chinese cyber activities are part of a larger strategy to gain an upper hand in the event of a major conflict. Officials have already detected Chinese-linked hacking groups infiltrating critical systems that could disrupt essential services, such as manipulating HVAC systems in data centers or disabling vital energy and water infrastructure.

The warning from Adamski follows the revelation of a highly damaging cyber espionage operation, known as “Salt Typhoon,” which targeted U.S. telecommunications firms. This operation, described by U.S. officials as the worst telecom hack in the nation’s history, resulted in the theft of call records and the compromise of communications between top officials from both major presidential campaigns. The FBI has issued statements confirming the scale of the breach and the sensitive nature of the stolen data.

Despite Beijing’s repeated denials of involvement in cyberattacks against U.S. entities, U.S. officials remain vigilant. The FBI and Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) have been providing support to affected organizations, offering technical assistance and guidance to mitigate the damage. Adamski also noted that the U.S. government has taken a proactive approach in countering Chinese cyber operations globally, using both defensive and offensive tactics to disrupt malicious activities.
