Meet Oden: The Therapy Pig Bringing Smiles To Kansas Seniors
A tiny piglet who once hid under chairs has become the star attraction at an Olathe senior living facility, where his daily rounds now include generous helpings of belly rubs, treats and endless smiles.
Oden, who started his therapy career no bigger than a soup can, has grown into a confident 40-pound charmer who struts through Good Samaritan Society’s hallways like he owns the place. His fan club includes residents, staff and anyone lucky enough to visit.
“He likes to walk the halls, and the residents get a chance to bond with him,” said Brett Martin, the maintenance director who introduced the unconventional therapy animal. Martin’s office, now known as “Oden’s headquarters,” has become the facility’s most popular gathering spot.
Between official duties, the sociable swine holds court behind a baby gate, greeting visitors with friendly grunts while accepting apple treats from his many admirers. His popularity has led to a slightly chubby figure, though the extra pounds only add to his endearing personality.
The therapy pig’s presence proves especially magical in the memory care unit, where former farmers often share emotional moments as Oden’s visits trigger cherished memories of life on the farm.
“I was very surprised,” resident Mindy Howell recalled about first hearing of their porcine therapist. “Everybody was talking about him, and I had never seen him. But it’s awesome!”
What started as an unusual proposal has blossomed into a heartwarming success story, proving that sometimes the best medicine comes with a snout and a curly tail.
Staff report that Oden’s gentle nature and winning personality have created a more joyful atmosphere throughout the facility, one grunt and smile at a time.
