In an exciting preview to his coming term in the White House, President-elect Donald Trump has reiterated the importance of U.S. ownership of Greenland, citing national security concerns and intimating that the US will be seeking to acquire the Danish territory. Trump’s comments were part of an announcement nominating Ken Howery as U.S. Ambassador to Denmark.

“For purposes of National Security and Freedom throughout the World, the United States of America feels that the ownership and control of Greenland is an absolute necessity,” Trump stated on Sunday.

Trump emphasized that Greenland would give the U.S. a critical edge in the Arctic, where Russia and China have invested heavily in military and scientific projects. He described U.S. control as vital to securing dominance in the region and protecting American interests.

Greenland’s resources and location make it a pivotal asset in the race for Arctic influence, Trump suggested, framing it as essential to American military and economic objectives.

Howery, Trump’s nominee for ambassador, previously served as U.S. Ambassador to Sweden. Trump praised him as a leader in innovation and technology, citing his success with PayPal and Founders Fund as examples of American ingenuity.

“Ken’s experience will be invaluable in representing us abroad,” Trump said, adding that Howery’s appointment reflects his administration’s focus on Arctic strategy and diplomacy.
