President-elect Donald Trump has urged House Republicans to rally behind a single reconciliation bill to achieve his administration’s legislative goals. House Speaker Mike Johnson conveyed Trump’s request during a closed-door meeting with GOP lawmakers.

Trump referred to the package as “one big beautiful bill,” advocating for a unified approach that streamlines the legislative process. The proposal seeks to address key priorities without the complications of splitting efforts across multiple bills, as discussed in the meeting.

Rep. Andy Harris (R-MD) has proposed a two-part strategy, suggesting an initial bill focused on border security. Harris explained that this approach would allow Trump to secure immediate funding for securing the southern border and deporting illegal aliens.

“The president needs resources now,” Harris said, arguing that deferring broader legislation to later in the year would allow for faster progress on urgent issues while leaving time for negotiations.

Rep. Jason Smith (R-MO), chair of the House Ways and Means Committee, supports Trump’s single-bill strategy. Smith highlighted the challenges of passing multiple reconciliation bills, particularly with the GOP’s narrow 219-215 majority in the House.
