As the Biden administration rushes another $500 million in military aid to Ukraine, thousands of American families in North Carolina are being kicked out of FEMA-funded hotels today. These families, already devastated by Hurricane Helene, now face freezing temperatures and snow with nowhere to go. This stark contrast between billions spent overseas and the neglect of Americans at home raises serious questions about the administration’s priorities.

FEMA’s Transitional Sheltering Assistance program, which provided temporary housing for hurricane survivors, officially ends today. The decision leaves 3,500 families scrambling for shelter as a winter storm brings snow and ice across the region. Temperatures are expected to drop into the teens, creating life-threatening conditions for those forced onto the streets.

FEMA claimed the removal of assistance was due to some homes being deemed “habitable,” families declining inspections or officials being unable to contact recipients. However, many families report that FEMA failed to complete inspections or provide clear communication. Residents are now left with few options as shelters across the state struggle to meet demand.

North Carolina Sen. Thom Tillis (R) sharply criticized FEMA for abandoning vulnerable families. “FEMA’s failure to act swiftly and decisively is not only unacceptable, but it is also putting vulnerable families at even greater risk,” Tillis stated. He called for the immediate deployment of federal resources to help those still suffering from Hurricane Helene’s destruction.

While thousands of Americans are left out in the cold, the Biden administration continues funneling billions into Ukraine’s war. Since 2022, the US has sent over $175 billion to support Ukraine, with little oversight on how the funds are spent. Yet, here at home, FEMA has only managed to deliver 90 temporary homes to North Carolina families in need.

Local shelters are doing what they can, but space is limited and resources are stretched thin. Many families now face the harsh winter weather without any clear path forward.
