In a move slammed as a deliberate and deceptive political maneuver, Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas has granted amnesty to 850,000 illegal immigrants just days before President Joe Biden leaves office. Critics argue this sweeping action is a strategic attempt to block President-elect Donald Trump’s efforts to enforce strict immigration laws.

Mayorkas extended the Temporary Protected Status (TPS) program for 18 months, shielding 234,000 Salvadorans and 600,000 Venezuelans from deportation. He cited ongoing weather-related issues in El Salvador and political instability in Venezuela as justification for this decision, which also renews work permits through March 2026.

“El Salvador’s extension of TPS is based on geological and weather events, including significant storms and heavy rainfall in 2023 and 2024,” Mayorkas claimed. However, many argue this reasoning is baseless, pointing to El Salvador’s growing stability and economic progress under President Nayib Bukele.

Conservatives believe this amnesty was intentionally rushed to create legal and logistical obstacles for Trump’s incoming administration. Trump has vowed to prioritize border security and deport illegal immigrants, but this mass amnesty now complicates his ability to swiftly enforce immigration laws.

Additionally, the Venezuelan amnesty is being criticized for indirectly supporting Nicolás Maduro’s socialist regime. By allowing Venezuelans to remain in the U.S., the Biden administration removes political pressure from Maduro and enables financial support through remittances that can further empower his dictatorship.

Under Mayorkas, the TPS program has ballooned to nearly one million recipients, tripling in size. This dramatic increase has placed additional strain on housing, healthcare and job markets across the country. While business groups applaud the decision for expanding the labor force, many Americans are left to bear the burden.

Trump will now face significant challenges in reversing this massive amnesty while fulfilling his promise to secure the border and prioritize the interests of American citizens.
