America First Act Aims To Cut Illegal Immigrants From Federal Aid Programs
Sen. Mike Lee (R-UT) is spearheading a legislative push to eliminate federal aid for illegal immigrants, arguing that taxpayer dollars should be directed solely to American citizens. The America First Act, introduced last year, would put an end to welfare benefits for those paroled into the country under Biden administration policies.
Lee highlighted the bill’s importance in a Senate Budget Committee hearing on Wednesday, stating that illegal immigrants have exploited welfare programs intended for struggling American families. He accused policymakers of failing to protect taxpayer money and enabling what he described as an ongoing crisis at the border.
The legislation has gained traction in the House with the support of Rep. Chip Roy (R-TX) and House Budget Committee Chair Jodey Arrington (R-TX), who estimate the bill would generate significant savings. Arrington pointed out that offering government benefits to illegal immigrants serves as a powerful draw for continued illegal entry.
Office of Management and Budget Director nominee Russell T. Vought voiced support for the proposal during the hearing, affirming that it aligns with President Donald Trump’s commitment to enforcing immigration laws and restoring fiscal responsibility.
Trump’s administration has already enacted executive orders addressing border security and deportations. Efforts to advance the SAVE Act, which focuses on preventing non-citizen voting, and the VALID Act, which limits DHS resources for transporting illegal immigrants, are also underway.
Despite Republican efforts, the bill is expected to meet opposition from Democratic lawmakers who argue that cutting off benefits would leave vulnerable populations without necessary assistance. However, supporters contend that it is a necessary step to curb illegal immigration and prioritize resources for Americans.
