Jordan Probes Whether Fulton County DA Coordinated With Jack Smith
House Judiciary Committee Chairman Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH) has launched an investigation into whether Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis (D) coordinated her indictment of former President Donald Trump with federal officials, including Special Counsel Jack Smith.
Jordan announced the probe just before Trump was scheduled to surrender for his arraignment in Fulton County, Georgia, on Thursday. The Judiciary Committee chairman has requested Willis’ office hand over all records related to the Trump indictment and whether Willis communicated with Smith or any federal officials.
In his letter to Willis, Jordan alleged that her “indictment and prosecution implicate substantial federal interests” and argued that “the circumstances surrounding your actions raise serious concerns about whether they are politically motivated.”
He went on to point out the coincidental timing of the indictment — noting that Willis waited more than two years after Trump supposedly committed the crimes he is being accused of, charging him and his allies in the middle of the presidential campaign and requesting that his trial begin at a key moment in the presidential election season.
“You did not bring charges until two-and-a-half years later, at a time when the campaign for the Republican presidential nomination is in full swing,” Jordan wrote. “Moreover, you have requested that the trial in this matter begin on March 4, 2024, the day before Super Tuesday and eight days before the Georgia presidential primary.”
“The timing of this prosecution reinforces concerns about your motivation,” he argued.
Jordan informed Willis in the letter that the Judiciary Committee would be investigating “whether federal law enforcement agencies or officials were involved in your investigation or indictment. It may also investigate whether DOJ raised any concerns about how your investigation impacted federal interests, and if so, whether and how those concerns were resolved.”
Jordan has given Willis a deadline of 10:00 a.m. on September 7, 2023, to respond to his request.
Meanwhile, Willis previously insisted that she has had no contact with Smith.
“I don’t know what Jack Smith is doing, Jack Smith doesn’t know what I’m doing. In all honesty, if Jack Smith was standing next to me, I’m not sure I would know who he was. My guess is he probably can’t pronounce my name correctly,” Willis claimed in comments to local media prior to filing charges against Trump.
Jordan isn’t the only one asserting that Willis had coordinated with Washington, D.C., officials in her indictment of Trump. Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich previously claimed during comments on The Charlie Kirk Show that Willis’ office was pressured to indict Trump earlier than expected because federal officials needed something in the headlines “to cover up all the mistakes we just made with” appointing Delaware U.S. Attorney David Weiss as special counsel to investigate Hunter Biden.
“I am told by a reliable source that Friday evening somebody from Washington called the district attorney in Atlanta and said, ‘You have to indict on Monday,’” Gingrich told host Charlie Kirk, founder of Turning Point USA.
