Gov. Kemp Rejects Special Session To Remove Fani Willis
Georgia Republican Gov. Brian Kemp announced at a Thursday press conference that he will not support efforts to remove embattled Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis. She is responsible for the most recent indictment of former President Donald Trump.
Kemp, who clashed with the former president previously, called the efforts “political theater.” His comments came after a GOP state senator promised to act against the rogue DA.
Hers is just the latest Democratic move to bump the 2024 Republican frontrunner from the race. She led the indictment charge against Trump and 18 of his associates.
Republican state Sen. Colton Moore introduced a measure in the Georgia legislature to call an emergency session. Its purpose was to investigate Willis and decide whether she violated the law in her pursuit of former President Trump.
Moore declared, “As a Georgia State Senator, I am officially calling for an emergency session to review the actions of Fani Willis.”
He said the country is under attack from “radical leftist prosecutors” who are weaponizing their offices to target political enemies.
Kemp incredibly defended the Democratic DA and said that her actions or lack thereof did not call for state oversight. He claimed that his administration would “follow the law and the Constitution.”
Moore told Kemp in an August letter that he had the support of three-fifths of both the Senate and House in Georgia, though he later backtracked in a statement to Fox News Digital. He is not the only GOP lawmaker in the Peach State calling for action against Willis.
The DA asked the Fulton County judge presiding over the case last week to expedite the trial. The 19 defendants are being tried together on charges they violated the state’s Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations (RICO) Act concerning the 2020 presidential election
It is likely that some defendants will seek to be tried separately. Willis asked for a deadline for any of the 19 to be able to request this action.
The Fulton County case is just one of four separate indictments against Trump supported by Democrats and their allies.
The former president is far and away the leader in the race for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination. Undoubtedly this is the motivation for Democrats to throw every charge against him hoping that something will stick.
Kemp had a chance to take action against politically motivated prosecutions but chose to stand on the sidelines. This hardly speaks well for the Georgia governor.
