NY Democrats Demand Tax Hike To Help Illegal Aliens

Several New York Democrats, including Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), have come together to demand several measures to help pay for New York’s illegal immigration crisis — including a tax hike on the wealthy.

The group of 20 New York Democrats, including several who self-identify as Democratic socialists, released a statement on Monday condemning both New York City and New York state’s response to the illegal immigration crisis — while also putting forth several supposed solutions to the crisis.

One of these proposals is an increase in state taxes for the top 5% of wealthy New Yorkers, with the money being spent on services for illegal aliens and the homeless.

New York state Sen. Jabari Brisport (D), a self-described Democratic Socialist who represents part of Brooklyn, spoke out about the proposals in a recent interview.

“I would absolutely be over the moon if they call back a special session to raise taxes on the rich,” Brisport said.

“New York is the most unequal state with the most billionaires in it, and they do not pay what they owe to the rest of us in New York,” he added. “So raising their taxes to fund social services for all New Yorkers.”

The Democrat lawmakers have also demanded that counties across New York be forced to take in and house illegal aliens through a statewide expansion of the right-to-shelter mandate. This comes after at least four New York counties issued executive order blocking illegal aliens from being placed in their communities, while also filing lawsuits against New York City for attempting to resettle illegal aliens in their communities.

The group of 20 New York Democrats also proposed that the state dip into its economic uncertainties fund, which currently holds over $13 billion.

Meanwhile, New York City has seen an influx of more than 110,000 illegal aliens since spring 2022 — with nearly 60,000 of those illegals being housed using taxpayers’ money. As the city has already spent over $1.2 billion on illegal aliens and is expected to spend up to $5 billion, New York City Mayor Eric Adams (D) has stated that the problem “will destroy New York City.”

“We’re getting 10,000 migrants a month… Every community in this city is going to be impacted,” he added.

It appears that New Yorkers agree with Adams that the influx of illegal aliens is a problem, as a recent poll showed that 41% of New York state residents now support a border wall spanning the entire length of the southern border. The same poll showed that even 38% of residents of deep-blue New York City support the border wall.

Several New York City residents made their feelings known during a recent press conference held by Ocasio-Cortez and several other prominent Democrats, drowning out the congresswoman while she attempted to speak to reporters with their chants of “close the border!”
