A Washington Post/ABC News poll released Sunday revealed that President Joe Biden is facing a significant drop in support and approval, while former President Donald Trump has surged to a commanding ten-point lead over Biden in the 2024 presidential race.

The new poll shows that Biden is lacking engagement among the American people, revealing that many have grown dissatisfied with his handling of the economy and illegal immigration — while others are concerned about the president’s age. Many also expressed their belief that the U.S. is doing too much in its support of the Ukraine war.

Overall, the 80-year-old president’s approval rating is 19 points underwater — while his ratings for handling the economy and illegal immigration are also at career lows. Biden’s overall approval rating remains at 37%, close to the position he was at back in May. According to the survey, 56% of Americans disapprove of the president — which aligns with many recent polls, as the Washington Post confirmed in its own report on the results.

However, the most shocking statistic to come out of the poll is that Trump is leading Biden by ten percentage points — which is far beyond the poll’s margin of error.

The poll also asked respondents whether they approve of the way Trump handled his presidency — with 48% expressing approval and 49% disapproval. This approval rating is roughly ten points higher than Trump’s rating when he left office in January 2021 — and is higher than most of his approval ratings throughout his presidency.

Meanwhile, the numbers for Biden are not looking good — with roughly three in four Americans stating that the economy is not so good or poor, 87% reporting that gas and energy prices are not so good or poor and 91% having a negative view of food prices.

Americans are also losing faith in Biden’s ability to handle the border crisis — with 62% disapproving of his handling of illegal immigration and only 23% approving. This is down from 28% approval in February.

Nearly three in four Americans stated that Biden is too old for a second term, which is up six percentage points since May.

The poll also asked about Biden’s demands to support Ukraine with billions of taxpayer dollars — showing that public opinion has shifted from initial support of Ukraine back when Russia invaded in February 2022. According to the poll, 41% believe that the U.S. is doing too much to help Ukraine, while 31% believe the U.S. has given the right amount of assistance and 18% claiming the U.S. has not done enough. Back in February 2023, only 33% believed the U.S. was doing too much to help Ukraine — while only 14% held that view in April 2022.

The Washington Post/ABC News poll was conducted among a random national sample of 1,006 U.S. adults from September 15-20 — with an overall margin of error of plus or minus 3.5 percentage points.
