Biden Celebrates ‘Lower’ Inflation As Americans Spend Hundreds More Per Month
During a speech in Wisconsin on Tuesday, President Joe Biden celebrated his economic record and claimed that “inflation is down” — even as millions of Americans are paying hundreds of dollars more per month for basic goods and services than two years ago.
After repeatedly refusing to respond to reporters’ questions about the Maui wildfires and refusing to add a trip to Hawaii to his schedule to coordinate disaster relief, Biden jetted off to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, to give a speech touting “Bidenomics” — followed by a vacation in Lake Tahoe.
While giving the speech at a wind turbine factory, Biden claimed that inflation was declining — despite a new report showing that Americans paid $709 more per month for basic goods and services in July 2023 compared to July 2021, just months after he took office.
“In case you haven’t noticed, inflation is down, too — and it’s going lower,” the president told the crowd in the key 2024 battleground state.
Biden also claimed that the U.S. has “the strongest economy in the world” during his speech — adding: “You’re looking at me a little skeptical, but I promise you. Check it out.”
Meanwhile, Republicans have responded to Biden’s claims about the economy — citing a decline in real wages and lingering 3.2% inflation, nearly 2% higher than it was when he entered the White House in January 2021. Gas prices have also skyrocketed in the past few weeks to the highest prices seen in months. The national average increased to $3.86 per gallon in the last several days, which is the highest price since October 19, 2022.
Speaker of the House Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) pointed this out in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter.
“Today, President Biden will tout his economic plan in Milwaukee, WI,” he began. “‘Bidenomics’ costs Americans $709 a month to pay for the same goods they had just 2 years ago.”
“Real wages are down and gas prices are up,” McCarthy added. “You are paying the price for failed leadership.”
Biden also tried to celebrate the inflation rate in a post on X, writing: “We have more to do, but inflation is down to just over 3 percent. That’s near its lowest point in over 2 years.”
