Developments this week in an ongoing legal battle have revealed the existence of approximately 82,000 pages of emails from Joe Biden, which he sent using three private pseudonym accounts during his time as vice president. The National Archives is now facing a lawsuit brought by the Southeastern Legal Foundation under the Freedom of Information Act.

The pseudonym accounts in question are “[email protected],” “[email protected],” and “[email protected],” and the emails span over eight years. This revelation comes as a shock due to the sheer volume of the emails, which surpasses even the 33,000 emails from former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s infamous private email scandal.

It is important to note that using private email for government business is discouraged under the law, and officials like Biden must preserve all government-related emails conducted on their private accounts under the Federal Records Act. The extensive collection held by the National Archives suggests that Biden did indeed preserve those emails.

Despite the sheer size of the collection, there is no indication thus far from the National Archives that any of Biden’s emails contain classified information. However, Biden is currently under investigation by Special Counsel Robert Hur for improper storage and removal of classified documents from his time as vice president.

This development comes at a time when Republicans are actively seeking records related to the Biden family’s dealings in Ukraine and other countries. They have asked the National Archives for an un-redacted document showing then-Vice President Biden took a call with the president of Ukraine, Petro Poroshenko, in 2016. At that time, top Ukrainian prosecutor Viktor Shokin was investigating oil company Burisma Holdings for corruption — the same company on which Hunter Biden served as a board member.

The scandal has taken on a new dimension with the Southeastern Legal Foundation’s lawsuit, which seeks access to Biden’s private emails to determine how much he discussed government affairs with his son and others. The Foundation and the National Archives are currently in talks to narrow the FOIA request to expedite the process of releasing the emails.

As we wait for the emails to be processed and released, many questions remain. What exactly will be revealed in these emails? Will they contain evidence that supports the claims made by Republicans regarding Biden’s dealings with Ukraine?

Regardless of what the emails reveal, one thing is sure — this email scandal has the potential to have significant legal and political implications for Biden’s presidency and his 2024 reelection campaign.
