Four years after President Donald Trump “lost” the 2020 election under contentious circumstances, Congress will certify his decisive 2024 Electoral College victory today. The White House will soon be occupied once again by the once and future president, Donald Trump.

The joint session, presided over by Vice President Kamala Harris, will finalize Trump’s 312-226 win. The certification, required by the Constitution, confirms the results of November’s election. Harris, who was Trump’s opponent in the race, will carry out her role in overseeing the process despite its uncomfortable nature.

The procedure involves opening and reading state-certified electoral votes. Tellers from both chambers of Congress will announce the results in alphabetical order. While members may submit objections to state certifications, these must be supported by one-fifth of both chambers to trigger debate. No such objections are expected this year.

This session comes four years after former Vice President Mike Pence certified Joe Biden’s 2020 victory amid allegations of irregularities and widespread questions about the election’s integrity. Pence’s decision not to intervene has been widely criticized by Trump’s supporters, who maintain that the 2020 process deserved greater scrutiny.

The return of Donald Trump to the presidency signals a dramatic political turnaround. The 2024 election emphasized themes of accountability and election integrity, issues that deeply resonated with millions of voters.

Following today’s certification, Trump will prepare for his January 20 inauguration, completing a historic return to the Oval Office.
