Longtime Democratic donor and Disney heiress Abigail Disney announced she will cease contributions to the Democratic Party until President Joe Biden steps down from the presidential race. Following Biden’s poor debate performance, Disney expressed her concerns during an interview with CNBC News on Thursday. She emphasized that her decision is based on practicality, not disrespect.

“I intend to stop any contributions to the party unless and until they replace Biden at the top of the ticket. This is realism, not disrespect,” Disney stated. “Biden is a good man and has served his country admirably, but the stakes are far too high. If Biden does not step down, the Democrats will lose. Of that, I am absolutely certain. The consequences for the loss will be genuinely dire.”

Disney’s financial support for the party has been significant. An FEC filing reveals she donated $50,000 to the Jane Fonda Climate Political Action Committee in April. This PAC has channeled $35,000 to Democratic congressional candidates. Additionally, Disney contributed $150,000 to Planned Parenthood Votes, a PAC that has allocated over $400,000 to Democrats this election cycle, including $26,000 to Biden.

Disney advocates for Vice President Kamala Harris as a suitable replacement for Biden, asserting that Harris is capable of defeating Donald Trump in the general election. “We have an excellent Vice President,” Disney said. “If Democrats would tolerate any of her perceived shortcomings even one-tenth as much as they have tolerated Biden’s, we can win this election by a lot.”

Her announcement comes amidst growing concern within the Democratic Party following Biden’s debate performance. Many Democrats fear that Biden’s cognitive health issues could hinder his ability to lead the country, prompting calls for him to withdraw from the race.
