The Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), led by Elon Musk, has uncovered widespread irregularities within Social Security, including millions of accounts listing beneficiaries as over 100 years old. The revelation has already caused major upheaval within the agency, with Acting Commissioner Michelle King stepping down over the weekend after reportedly [refusing] DOGE’s request for access to recipient data.

Musk, who has been leading the government reform effort under President Donald Trump, [revealed] that an initial review of Social Security records turned up beneficiaries listed as 150 years old or older. “Now, do you know anyone that’s 150? I don’t,” Musk told reporters, calling the situation “crazy.”

The Social Security Administration’s own audits have [acknowledged] a long-standing issue with outdated records, with one review [finding] that nearly 19 million people listed as over 100 years old had no record of death. Though officials have [claimed] that the majority are not receiving benefits, DOGE’s findings have [raised] new concerns about potential fraud.

Meanwhile, King’s sudden resignation [adds] to the turmoil. Reports indicate that she [refused] to grant DOGE access to Social Security’s recipient database, citing privacy concerns. The White House [announced] that President Trump has nominated Frank Bisignano to lead the agency, calling him “highly qualified and talented.”

The ongoing investigation has already [sparked] renewed scrutiny into how Social Security processes and tracks beneficiaries. DOGE is also [looking] into other federal departments, including the IRS and Treasury, as part of its broader crackdown on waste and mismanagement.

Musk, for his part, has made it clear that uncovering fraud is just the beginning. “If money is spent badly, if your taxpayer dollars are not spent in a sensible and frugal manner, then that’s not okay,” he said.
