After reinstating controversial journalist Alex Jones to X, formerly known as Twitter, platform owner Elon Musk defended his decision and declared that he is willing to go to prison to defend freedom of speech.

Despite smears from the mainstream media, Jones was not banned from Twitter for his conspiracy theories about the Sandy Hook mass shooting. The controversial journalist was actually kicked off the platform for daring to confront CNN reporter Oliver Darcy outside of a congressional hearing about censorship on social media.

The platform, which was still known as Twitter at the time and was owned by leftists who opposed free speech, claimed that Jones’ actions amounted to “harassment,” and subsequently banned him.

He was reinstated to the platform over the weekend by Musk following a poll, where 70% of respondents voted “yes” to allowing Jones to return.

Following Jones’ return, Musk joined a live “Spaces” conversation to discuss free speech with several prominent commentators — including Human Events senior editor Jack Posobiec, Andrew Tate and Jones himself.

The question that led to Musk’s declaration came from Posobiec, who brought up the infamous “Twitter Files” — which were leaked internal messages and documents exposing the social media platform’s previous owners’ censorship and collusion with government actors. The files were given to various independent journalists by Musk, allowing them to reveal the truth behind the censorship industrial complex that exists within Big Tech and its partnership with the federal government.

After citing the “Twitter Files,” Posobiec then asked Musk what he would do if a government agency came to him and threatened to arrest him if he would not remove content that does not violate the law from his platform.

“We will be as transparent as possible with X. And frankly, if I think a government agency is breaking the law and there are demands on the platform, I would be prepared to go to prison personally if I think they are the ones breaking the law,” Musk responded.

His comments were widely celebrated by free speech advocates on social media, including many who noted that this was exactly why he is “the perfect person to own X.”
