Former Republican Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich is calling on the Republican National Committee (RNC) to cancel future debates because the “race is over” and work with former President Donald Trump.

Gingrich made the comments during a Thursday evening appearance on Fox News Channel’s “The Ingraham Angle.”

The former House Speaker began by pointing out that the outcome of the Republican primary has already been decided — noting that GOP donors have zealously funded Trump’s challengers, but despite that, voters already know who they’re going to choose.

Gingrich noted that a conversation with his friend, pollster Matt Towery, had led them to conclude that “this race is over. Donald Trump will be the nominee. They might as well quit having the various debates, because they don’t work. They’re not helping anybody.”

He went on to emphasize the fact that the only options in the 2024 presidential race are Trump and President Joe Biden, and warned that Biden’s reelection would be “a disaster for the country.”

“Well, I think the Republican National Committee should cancel the future debates, and say, ‘look, we recognize the objective fact that Trump will be the nominee. We want to work with him,’” Gingrich argued. “And then the next big hurdle is a totally corrupt judicial system, which is trying every way it can to deny the American people the right to have the candidate that they’re choosing.”

Trump didn’t even show up to the second GOP primary debate, as he has reached the same conclusion as Gingrich — and instead, chose to deliver a speech to striking auto workers in Detroit, Michigan, on debate night. In an interview with the Daily Caller after his speech, Trump made a similar argument about the debates — noting that the RNC has to “stop the debates” because they are “bad for the Republican Party.”

“They are not going anywhere. There is not going to be a breakout candidate,” Trump added. “I am very concerned about the RNC not being able to do their job.”

Gingrich also noted during his Fox News appearance that Democrats are afraid of Trump becoming the Republican nominee — stating that the left is trying to handicap the former president’s chances in the election through “doing everything they can legally, because they can’t do anything politically.”

He explained that Americans’ frustration with the economy and the general state of the country are good predictors of Trump’s 2024 victory.

The former president is currently leading Biden by a staggering ten points, according to a Washington Post/ABC News poll released earlier this month.
