Newly confirmed Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has wasted no time in taking action against retired Gen. Mark Milley, immediately revoking his security clearance and personal security detail. Milley, who has been credibly accused of treasonous conduct, will no longer have access to classified information—an overdue step given his history of undermining the chain of command.

The Pentagon confirmed that Milley’s security detail, originally assigned due to threats from Iran, has been removed. Additionally, Hegseth has ordered an Inspector General review to determine whether Milley should lose a star in retirement for actions that weakened military authority and disrupted the proper chain of command.

This move follows a broader effort to erase Milley’s influence within the Pentagon. His last remaining portrait is set to be removed from the Army’s Marshall Corridor, ensuring that his tenure is no longer honored within military leadership circles. The first portrait of Milley was already taken down on Inauguration Day, signaling a shift in defense priorities under President Donald Trump.

Milley’s actions, including his interference in civilian leadership decisions and other policy failures, had raised concerns about his continued access to sensitive military information. Under the previous administration, he retained his clearance, despite reports of conduct that compromised the authority of elected officials.

The Biden administration preemptively pardoned Milley before leaving office, a move that raised further questions about what potential consequences he may have faced. Now, with his security clearance revoked and an official review underway, the focus is on preventing any further information leaks or damage to national security.

With Milley now stripped of his privileges, the Trump administration has taken a critical step toward ensuring accountability within the military. Whether additional measures will be taken against Milley remains to be seen, but the swift action by Hegseth makes clear that no one is above the chain of command.
