New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy is facing serious legal questions after openly admitting he had taken in an individual whose immigration status had yet to be resolved. His remarks, which appeared to challenge federal authorities, have drawn the attention of Trump’s border czar, Tom Homan, who has promised an investigation and possible prosecution.

Murphy made his statement during a public event, boasting that he had allowed a person with unresolved immigration status to live in his home. He then directly defied federal law enforcement, saying, “Good luck to the feds coming in to try to get her.” The statement quickly sparked outrage, with many questioning whether Murphy had knowingly violated immigration laws.

Homan, appearing on Fox News, issued a direct warning. “If he’s knowingly harboring and concealing an illegal alien, that’s a violation of Title 8, United States Code 1324,” he said. “I will seek prosecution or the secretary will seek prosecution.” Homan added that he had taken note of Murphy’s comments and would not allow them to go unchecked.

Murphy’s office later attempted to walk back his statement, claiming that his words had been “misinterpreted.” His representatives insisted that the individual in question was a legal resident and that Murphy’s comments had been taken out of context. However, his refusal to clarify why he issued a challenge to federal authorities only added to the controversy.

Trump’s administration has launched a renewed crackdown on illegal immigration, with ICE agents rounding up thousands of illegal immigrants in the past two weeks. Homan has been vocal about holding sanctuary city leaders accountable, arguing that their refusal to cooperate with ICE has led to violent crime and unnecessary deaths. He specifically cited cases like Laken Riley’s murder, which he believes could have been prevented if law enforcement had been allowed to act.

As the situation develops, Murphy’s defiance could have serious legal consequences. With Trump’s administration committed to enforcing immigration laws, state officials who obstruct federal efforts may find themselves facing prosecution. Homan’s promise to investigate signals that the administration will not hesitate to hold public officials accountable for violating the law.
