Illegal Border Crossings Reached New Single-Day Record This Week
Even as border state officials attempt to address the issue on their own, the Biden administration’s failure to enforce federal immigration laws continues contributing to a worsening crisis. According to multiple sources, Monday broke the single-day record for the number of migrant encounters along the U.S.-Mexico border.
While Customs and Border Protection personnel told Fox News that the number was north of 12,600, government data indicated the actual total was nearly 2,000 higher.
Thousands of additional migrants were still waiting at the border waiting to be processed and were not included in the daily total. Many facilities remained at nearly three times their capacity as of Tuesday morning and border agents were outnumbered by migrants by a roughly 200-to-1 margin.
While Republican Texas Gov. Greg Abbott has been sending personnel and resources to the border in order to stem the tide of illegal immigration into his state for some time, even Democratic Gov. Katie Hobbs of Arizona has taken a similar approach in recent days, dispatching the state’s National Guard troops to the border in order to support law enforcement.
Arizona has seen a staggering 28% increase in illegal border crossings this month.
Meanwhile, a group of Republican lawmakers are pushing to impeach Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas — who has claimed on multiple occasions that the border is “closed” — for his ineffective handling of the border crisis.
President Joe Biden’s dismal immigration record is clear when compared to the standard under the Obama administration during which Biden was serving as vice president.
In 2019, former Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson declared that 1,000 border apprehensions per day would “overwhelm the system” during his time serving in the Obama administration.
Earlier this week, U.S. Sen. Ron Johnson (R-WI) cited Johnson’s remarks in a statement calling for a more cohesive GOP strategy for negotiating with Democrats on the topic of border security.
“Unfortunately, President Biden and his Democrat allies in Congress WANT an open border,” Johnson wrote. “Biden came into office with the border largely secured, and then immediately reversed all the policies that had successfully stemmed the flow of illegal migrants. The fact that President Biden and congressional Democrats ARE the root cause of the current crisis is a major problem in conducting good-faith negotiations with them.”
