House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) hinted that Democrats could potentially refuse to certify the 2024 election results if Donald Trump secures a victory. In an interview on CNN’s State of the Union, Jeffries was asked by anchor Jake Tapper whether a Republican-controlled House would certify the election results if Kamala Harris were to win. Jeffries deflected, focusing instead on Democratic efforts to regain the House majority before the certification process even becomes an issue.

The Democrat leader’s response has raised concerns about the possibility of Democrats blocking the certification of the election if Trump wins. Jeffries accused Republicans of laying the groundwork to contest the election results and criticized their alleged plan to consolidate power through Project 2025, which he described as an effort to gain “total control” over the government. However, Project 2025 is primarily a conservative policy platform with no direct ties to election interference.

Jeffries’ remarks come as Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-MD) has openly discussed the possibility of Congress blocking Trump’s certification if he wins. Raskin suggested that the 14th Amendment’s insurrection clause could be used to disqualify Trump from office. This idea has sparked debate about whether Democrats might take unprecedented steps to prevent a Trump victory from being certified.
