Judge Threatens Sanctions Against Hunter Biden’s Lawyers For Misleading Claims
A federal judge in California has threatened to impose sanctions on Hunter Biden’s legal team for allegedly making false statements in their attempt to dismiss his tax case. Judge Mark Scarsi criticized Biden’s attorneys, Abbe Lowell and Bartholomew Dalton, for claiming that charges against Biden were only filed after David Weiss was appointed as special counsel.
Judge Scarsi pointed out that Weiss had initiated charges in his capacity as a U.S. Attorney before being appointed special counsel, which distinguishes Biden’s case from Trump’s. Scarsi emphasized the seriousness of the false claims, stating, “This court has little tolerance for lack of candor from counsel.”
The judge has given Biden’s lawyers an opportunity to respond adequately or face monetary penalties. He also allowed them to amend their incorrect filings. The controversy revolves around whether Weiss, initially approved by the Senate as U.S. Attorney, had the authority to bring charges against Biden in California.
The dispute arose after the dismissal of Trump’s Florida charges due to Smith’s appointment without congressional consent. Biden’s lawyers argued that Weiss’s appointment was similarly flawed, but Judge Scarsi highlighted the significant differences between the two cases.
Hunter Biden is set to face trial in September for allegedly failing to pay taxes on $1.4 million owed to the IRS over three years. Additionally, he was found guilty in Delaware for possessing a firearm while addicted to crack cocaine, which could result in a 25-year prison sentence. The case continues to draw significant attention as legal battles and political implications unfold.
