Attorney General Pam Bondi announced Wednesday that the Department of Justice has filed a lawsuit against New York, accusing the state of obstructing federal immigration enforcement. The legal action targets Gov. Kathy Hochul, Attorney General Letitia James and DMV Commissioner Mark Schroeder, citing policies that restrict cooperation with federal authorities.

The lawsuit centers on New York’s Green Light Law, which allows illegal immigrants to obtain driver’s licenses and prevents state agencies from sharing DMV records with federal immigration officials. Additionally, the law requires that illegal immigrants be alerted when federal authorities request their records, which the DOJ argues hinders enforcement efforts.

Bondi made it clear that the DOJ intends to take action against any state that blocks federal immigration efforts. “If you don’t comply with federal law, we will hold you accountable,” she said. She also pointed to a similar lawsuit recently filed against Illinois, signaling that the administration is escalating its crackdown on sanctuary policies.

Law enforcement officials have raised concerns that the law makes it difficult to verify identities, potentially putting officers at risk. Bondi echoed these concerns, saying the policy limits critical information-sharing between state and federal agencies.

New York officials, including Hochul and James, have defended the state’s policies, arguing they are necessary to protect immigrant communities. The lawsuit is expected to face a legal battle as state leaders push back against the administration’s efforts.

Last week, Bondi announced a freeze on federal funding to sanctuary cities, further intensifying pressure on states and municipalities that refuse to comply with immigration enforcement efforts.
