Philip H. Gordon, the national security adviser to Vice President Kamala Harris, has been implicated in a concerning Iranian influence operation, prompting a full investigation into the Biden-Harris administration’s special envoy to Iran, Robert Malley. Senator Tom Cotton (R-AR) and Representative Elise Stefanik (R-NY) have raised alarms over Gordon’s alleged connections to Ariane Tabatabai, a senior Defense Department official accused of involvement in the Iranian influence effort.

In a letter sent on Wednesday, Cotton and Stefanik pointed out that Gordon co-authored multiple opinion pieces with Tabatabai that appeared to promote the Iranian regime’s agenda. “Before joining your office, Mr. Gordon co-authored at least three opinion pieces with Ms. Tabatabai blatantly promoting the Iranian regime’s perspective and interests,” the letter states. One piece from March 2020 suggested that maintaining sanctions on Iran would lead to a “catastrophe” in the Middle East, while another warned that sanctions could provoke Iran to “lash out with attacks on its neighbors, and on Americans and American interests in the Middle East.”

The lawmakers have demanded Vice President Harris disclose the circumstances of Gordon’s hiring, including whether she was aware of his ties to Tabatabai and the Iran Experts Initiative (IEI), a group controlled by the Iranian regime’s Foreign Ministry. Additionally, they questioned whether Gordon holds an active security clearance.

Cotton and Stefanik’s letter also presses Harris about Tabatabai’s current role at the U.S. Department of Defense. Reports from The National Pulse in September revealed that Tabatabai, despite her alleged ties to the Iranian influence operation, obtained a security clearance and served as an aide to Robert Malley before transitioning to the Defense Department. Following these revelations, the State Department placed Malley on unpaid leave and revoked his security clearance.

The implications of these connections are significant, raising questions about the integrity of the national security protocols within the Biden-Harris administration. As the investigation unfolds, there is growing concern about the potential impact of these alleged ties on U.S. national security.
