Kash Patel’s FBI Investigates James Comey’s Alleged Operation Against Trump Campaign

The FBI under new Director Kash Patel has launched an investigation into former Director James Comey’s alleged use of covert operatives against Donald Trump’s 2016 campaign. A whistleblower has come forward with claims that Comey personally oversaw an off-the-books effort to insert undercover agents into Trump’s team, a move that raises new questions about the bureau’s conduct during the election.
According to disclosures made to the House Judiciary Committee, Comey reportedly deployed two female operatives as “honeypots” in 2015 to gather intelligence on Trump and his advisers. The term “honeypot” refers to agents who feign romantic interest in a target to extract information. These undercover agents were allegedly embedded within Trump’s campaign team, specifically targeting then-adviser George Papadopoulos.
Reports indicate that Comey, along with former Deputy Director Dave Bowdich and then-Associate Deputy Director Paul Abbate, directed the operation. The effort was reportedly shut down after a media outlet obtained a photograph of one of the agents, leading to concerns that the operation would be exposed.
Patel, who was sworn in as FBI director last week, had pledged during his confirmation hearings that he would not engage in politically motivated investigations. However, the emergence of the whistleblower’s claims has led to renewed scrutiny of Comey’s actions while leading the bureau. Patel has vowed to restore integrity within the FBI and is now working to track down those involved in the alleged operation.
The FBI has not publicly commented on the details of the investigation. Patel’s team is reportedly reviewing internal records and interviewing individuals with knowledge of the operation. The investigation is separate from the 2016 Crossfire Hurricane probe, which was launched to investigate alleged ties between Trump’s campaign and Russia.
Trump, who dismissed Comey from his role in 2017, has long accused the former FBI director of working against him. Comey has denied any wrongdoing. Patel’s investigation into the matter signals that the bureau’s new leadership is serious about holding past officials accountable for their actions.
