Elon Musk is calling for the impeachment of U.S. District Judge Paul Engelmayer after the Obama-appointed judge issued an emergency order restricting his Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) from accessing Treasury Department payment systems. Musk, appointed by President Donald Trump to lead the initiative to eliminate government waste, blasted the ruling as an effort to shield corruption.

“A corrupt judge protecting corruption. He needs to be impeached NOW!” Musk wrote on X early Sunday. His post came after Engelmayer sided with a lawsuit filed by 19 Democrat-led states arguing that DOGE’s access to Treasury records exceeded legal authority.

Engelmayer’s ruling not only blocked access but also ordered the immediate destruction of all Treasury data obtained since Trump took office. Musk responded with outrage, stating, “How on Earth are we supposed to stop fraud and waste of taxpayer money without looking at how money is spent? That’s literally impossible! Something super shady is going to protect scammers.”

Republican lawmakers are rallying behind Musk’s push for transparency. Sen. Mike Lee (R-UT) called the ruling a “judicial coup,” while Rep. Darrell Issa (R-CA) announced plans to introduce legislation ensuring DOGE retains access to Treasury payment systems.

The lawsuit leading to the ruling was filed by New York Attorney General Letitia James and other Democrat attorneys general, who claimed the Treasury Department improperly granted DOGE nearly unrestricted access to critical financial data. The administration, however, insists that DOGE’s oversight is necessary to prevent billions of dollars in fraudulent government payments.

Despite Democrat opposition, Musk remains committed to his mission. He has already revealed that over $100 billion in entitlement payments are being issued annually without proper documentation, with Treasury staff estimating that at least half of that total—$50 billion per year—is fraudulent.

With Engelmayer’s ruling in place, DOGE’s ability to investigate and expose government waste has been temporarily halted. A hearing is scheduled for February 20, where Musk’s team is expected to challenge the decision.
