A tech showdown that could have reached historical proportions now appears to be little more than a war of words. Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg’s hyped mixed martial arts (MMA) charity event seemed like it would become a reality, with Musk even reaching out to Italy’s cultural officials to nail down an “epic location.” Sadly, it seems Zuckerberg had a change of heart, leaving Musk and potential fans more than a little disappointed.

The highly anticipated clash would have seen the 39-year-old father of three, Zuckerberg squaring off against the 52-year-old owner of Tesla, SpaceX, and X, the platform previously known as Twitter, Musk.

Both tech magnates have MMA training, with Zuckerberg’s background in jiu-jitsu and Musk’s training under renowned practitioners like John Danaher and Lex Friedman. However, the bout would have been more UFC style than traditional boxing, capturing the true essence of their combat training.

The match’s build-up had been a rollercoaster. Musk mentioned a potential minor surgery on his upper back, allowing Zuckerberg to pitch an August 26 fight date. Despite this, Musk later suggested that the fight occur in Italy, echoing sentiments of historic gladiator duels.

According to Italy’s culture minister, Gennaro Sangiuliano, Musk had reached out, discussing “a great charity and historical evocation event.” Yet, Zuckerberg and several media outlets soon claimed Musk had second thoughts about the duel.

Zuckerberg’s posts on his platform, Threads, didn’t hide his disappointment. He stated, “I love this sport and I’ve been ready to fight since the day Elon challenged me. If he ever agrees on an actual date, you’ll hear it from me.” And later, “I think we can all agree Elon isn’t serious and it’s time to move on.” He accused Musk of delaying the fight, citing surgery and even requesting a practice round. Media outlets like NBC News and The Verge quickly picked up this spin, painting Musk as the hesitant party.

But Musk had a sharp response ready for Zuckerberg. He posted a screenshot of his text conversation with Zuckerberg, seemingly showing his readiness to fight almost anywhere, anytime. It seemed as though Zuckerberg was the one finding reasons to delay.

Musk didn’t mince words either, tweeting, “Zuck is a chicken,” following Zuckerberg’s decision to step back. The potential size difference was another point of contention. Musk told Zuckerberg he had little confidence in bridging that gap.

Yet, the feud has captured the imagination of the public and the media. This is a testament to both titans’ vast influence and interest in our digital age. Whether in the boardroom or the ring, the Musk-Zuckerberg dynamic is bound to continue sparking attention.
