Elon Musk is enhancing his security after accusing the mainstream media of inciting assassination threats against him and Donald Trump. The accusations come after German news outlet Der Spiegel featured Musk on its cover, branding him “Public Enemy No. 2” for his support of Trump. Musk took to X to express his outrage, claiming that the media’s continued attacks are “actively encouraging” attempts on both his and Trump’s lives.

At a town hall event in Pittsburgh, Musk addressed the threat, saying that the media’s portrayal of him is putting him at greater risk. He shared that Der Spiegel painted him and Trump as existential threats to democracy, a narrative he finds both dangerous and misleading. Musk reaffirmed his commitment to free speech and the Constitution, stating, “I’m literally trying to uphold the Constitution and ensure we have a free and fair election.”

Musk announced he would be upgrading his security in response to these threats, mentioning the dangers of becoming a target in today’s political climate. He quipped, “I guess I better cancel that open-car parade,” referencing the tragic assassination of President Kennedy. Despite the risks, Musk remains committed to his political engagement, noting that while this is not what he originally wanted, the stakes are too high to back down.

He also commented on the growing hostility from the left, describing it as “vitriolic hatred” that he did not expect. Musk contrasted the attitudes of the political left and right, suggesting that those on the right are generally more tolerant of differing views, while the left has escalated its rhetoric to dangerous levels.
