NYC Mayor Adams Admits Border Crisis Represents Terrorist Threat
The longer Democratic New York City Mayor Eric Adams is forced to deal with the impact of an unchecked influx of undocumented migrants into his city, the more his rhetoric begins to dovetail with the concerns of the Republican officials he previously denounced.
Days after he lamented that the migrant crisis would “destroy” his city, Adams echoed the warnings of many on the right that terrorists are likely already exploiting the nation’s porous border.
On the 22nd anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, Adams asserted that certain evildoers “would exploit even this migrant issue coming through our southern border,” seeing it as “an opportunity to come here and harm our country.”
The mayor went on to note that at least some of the migrants who continue to cross into the U.S. “are coming because they want to harm America.”
He referenced terrorist “sleeper cells” as a serious threat to the homeland, insisting: “There are those out there who want us to feel comfortable and feel as though we don’t have enemies that want to hurt our way of life. And we have to be concerned on many levels.”
Recalling what he witnessed in the immediate aftermath of the attacks on the World Trade Center, Adams noted that “extreme liberties” in times of peace “can actually get in the way and allow dangerous people to harm us, and that’s why what is happening right now at our border, we need to be vigilant not to allow those who hate America to enter America and harm us from the inside.”
His dire warning closely aligned with remarks from GOP Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis. Both men were at Ground Zero in New York City for the 9/11 anniversary on Monday.
“I think that there is a good bet that somebody that’s come across that border will commit an act of terrorism,” the GOP presidential primary candidate said.
Affirming that individuals from around the world, including places with ties to terrorism, have crossed into the U.S. from Mexico, DeSantis said that a flawed immigration system was in part responsible for making the 9/11 attacks possible.
“A lot of these guys should not have been in the country — had overstayed visas and whatnot,” he said of the attackers.
