President Joe Biden has been flirting with historically low approval numbers throughout most of his presidency. As his policies on the economy, immigration, and international affairs continue to attract bipartisan backlash, however, one new poll reveals that his rating has reached an all-time low of just 33%.

A clear majority — 58% — told ABC News-Ipsos pollsters that they disapprove of the president.

With a general election rapidly approaching, Biden’s unpopularity is sure to be a hindrance to his hopes of securing another term in the White House. In fact, no sitting president has seen his approval drop so low since the final years of the George W. Bush administration, which paved the way for a political pendulum swing that resulted in Barack Obama’s 2008 election.

Meanwhile, Trump, whom Democrats have spent years maligning as deeply unpopular, currently has an approval rating eight points higher than Biden.

As Gallup explained in 2020, there has been a clear correlation between presidential approval ratings and re-election dating back at least to the Truman administration.

“Historically, all incumbents with an approval rating of 50% or higher have won reelection, and presidents with approval ratings much lower than 50% have lost,” the polling firm reported.

Despite Biden’s inauspicious position, some of his dutiful supporters continue to downplay the impact that his low approval rating will have on November’s election.

Democratic Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker appeared on ABC News where he attempted to convince Americans — and perhaps himself — that Biden’s political fortunes would reverse before Election Day.

“Things are getting better in this country,” he claimed. “And over the course of an election year, as the economy continues to improve, you’re going to see poll numbers improve too.”

Pritzker went on to dismiss the latest poll as “a bit of an outlier” before turning his attention to the other side of the aisle.
“You’ve got a bunch of Republicans, MAGA Republicans, espousing things that are not good for the American public that are on the stage now,” he insisted. “And it’s not until they choose a nominee will we truly be in this battle. And then it’s a choice.”
