Radiation levels in New York City have spiked sharply, raising alarms after recent reports of unusual drone activity along the East Coast. Authorities are now urging the public to be cautious as these new readings show radiation levels far exceeding the safety threshold.

Recent data from the Geiger Counter World Map revealed radiation levels of 1,048 counts-per-minute (CPM) in areas like the Bronx and Upper West Side. These readings are more than five times the normal safety threshold of 200 CPM. In comparison, typical background radiation levels for an average person range from 5 to 60 CPM, highlighting the unusual nature of these spikes.

Gordon Chang, an expert on U.S.-China relations, has raised concerns that the drones could be linked to efforts to detect or plant a “dirty bomb.” Chang pointed to the concentration of radiation across both sides of the Hudson River, suggesting the drones could be searching for a nuclear device. “These drones might be involved in locating a device,” he explained, drawing a comparison to last year’s Chinese spy balloon incident, which raised similar concerns about U.S. airspace security.

Chang also criticized President Joe Biden for his failure to address the issue publicly, urging the president to provide an update on the situation. “It’s time for the president to inform the American people about what the government knows and doesn’t know,” Chang said. He also warned that the U.S. is ill-prepared for a potential attack involving a radioactive device, noting that citizens should be ready with essential supplies like food, water, and iodine pills.

In addition to the radiation reports, there have been concerns in New Jersey about missing radioactive materials. Mayor Michael Melham expressed worry over a shipment of damaged medical devices, though authorities have downplayed the situation as a “non-emergency.”

As the radiation levels continue to rise, many are questioning the nation’s readiness for such threats. The growing uncertainty surrounding the drones and missing radioactive materials underscores the need for better preparedness and a more transparent response from the federal government.
