As Special Counsel Jack Smith continues his witch hunt of former President Donald Trump, Republican members of Congress are striking back.

The Daily Caller reported that nine lawmakers sent a letter to Attorney General Merrick Garland last week. They asked that he release the results of the conflict of interest review conducted on Smith.

Rep. Eric Burlison (R-MO) asserted in the writing that “Mr. Smith has a history of questionable prosecutions.” This pattern included the prosecution of former Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell. The Republican’s conviction was unanimously overturned by the U.S. Supreme Court.

It is established that Smith’s wife, Katy Chevigny, produced a documentary on former First Lady Michelle Obama. She also donated to President Joe Biden’s 2020 campaign for the White House.

Smith took a two-pronged attack on the former president after being appointed as special counsel last November. He led the investigation into the classified documents case in which Trump has been indicted and is in charge of the current probe into Jan. 6.

The letter stated that standard procedure before Smith’s probe would be to conduct a review of his “ethics and conflicts of interest” as well as a background check.

Assuming that the review was in fact done, the lawmakers stated that it is vital that the findings be released. This should be done “in order for the American people to have confidence in Mr. Smith’s investigation.”

Burlison told the Daily Caller before the letter was sent that the public should view the unredacted findings of the conflict of interest review.

The Republican representative added that “given Smith’s publicly known history, one would assume these issues would have ruled him out as an ‘impartial’ Special Counsel.” Apparently not.

Trump announced on July 18 that he’d received a letter from Smith two days earlier informing him that he is the “target” of the investigation into the Jan. 6 Capitol incident. The former president noted this “almost always means an arrest and indictment.”

This could indicate a third indictment for the 2024 GOP presidential frontrunner, and a fourth is possible pending an investigation in Georgia.

Whether the DOJ releases Smith’s internal review or not, it is abundantly clear that Democrats want Trump out of the way before next year’s election. And if it takes weaponizing the federal government to accomplish this goal, so be it.
