It is a telling sign when Republicans are working against their own party interests and with Democrats instead. According to NBC News, this disgraceful effort is ongoing to ensure House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan (R-OH) does not become the next speaker.

The outlet reported that Rep. Mike Rogers (R-AL) and other GOP colleagues have conducted closed-door meetings to this end.

The Republicans met with Democratic House Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) to plot a roadblock to Jordan reaching the necessary 218 votes to assume the gavel. The clock is ticking on this decision as another potential federal government shutdown looms.

With the slim majority held by the GOP, only five party members need to oppose Jordan for the speakership to be out of his grasp.

Rogers tried to explain his actions. “They put us in this ditch along with eight traitors. We’re still the majority party; we’re willing to work with them, but they gotta tell us what they need.”

The Alabama representative referred to the eight Republicans who voted to oust former Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA). He accused them of “paralyzing” the majority party.

Meanwhile, Jeffries acknowledged on Sunday that the rumors are true — some Republicans are working with Democrats on a scheme to block Jordan’s path. “When we get back to Washington tomorrow, it’s important to begin to formalize those discussions.”

For his part, Jordan is working to convince reluctant GOP colleagues that he deserves their support when votes are taken on the House floor.

It has been nearly two weeks since the Speaker’s position was vacated, and Jordan has gathered some powerful endorsements. McCarthy threw his backing behind the Ohio representative, saying he would “do an excellent job.”

And former President Donald Trump, the 2024 Republican primary frontrunner, made his position clear by enthusiastically backing Jordan.

According to Axios, the weekend tally showed “a bloc of 10-20 “no” votes” as recently as Sunday night. However, the outlet said a House Republican revealed by Monday morning that the total was “down to seven.”

The same source expressed confidence that “Jordan will pull this off.”

A true conservative voice is needed to lead the party in the House, not just one who was forced into that position. Jordan is clearly the correct choice.
