Secret Service Faces Backlash For Denying Enhanced Security For Trump
Top officials within the Secret Service have faced criticism for reportedly denying requests to bolster security for President Donald Trump over the past two years. Agents on Trump’s detail had requested additional personnel, including snipers and specialized units, and equipment like magnetometers for his public events.
According to the Washington Post, four anonymous sources revealed that these requests were denied by senior officials due to a “lack of resources.” Magnetometers are vital for detecting metal objects and maintaining security at large gatherings.
Anthony Guglielmi, Chief of Communications for the Secret Service, responded to these allegations on July 14, stating, “The assertion that additional security resources were requested and denied is completely false.” He noted that the Secret Service had recently enhanced the protective measures for Trump’s detail.
Nevertheless, the Secret Service later admitted that some requests might have been turned down. The agency’s limited budget and expanding list of protectees have led to challenging decisions about resource allocation.
The criticism intensified following an assassination attempt on Trump at a recent rally. On July 13, 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks fired at Trump from a rooftop, striking him in the upper part of his right ear. The incident has prompted severe scrutiny of the Secret Service’s security procedures.
In an interview with ABC News, Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle explained that agents were not placed on the rooftop due to the dangers of the sloped surface. The agency has faced significant criticism for this and other security lapses during the event.
