Senator Demands Disciplinary Action For Hunter Biden Legal Team
Sen. Pete Ricketts (R-NE) has demanded disciplinary action be taken against a member of Hunter Biden’s legal team after she allegedly pretended to be a staffer on the House Ways and Means Committee during a phone call with the court clerk during which she requested to have evidence thrown out in the case against Hunter.
Earlier this week, it was revealed that Latham and Watkins lawyer Jessica Bengels, who works on Hunter Biden’s legal team, had called the clerks for U.S. District Judge Maryellen Noreika — who is overseeing the criminal tax evasion case against President Joe Biden’s son, Hunter.
During the call, Bengels asked the clerk to place the Amicus Brief from the House Ways and Means Committee that includes IRS whistleblower testimony under seal. She allegedly falsely claimed that she was doing this at the behest of the Ways and Means Committee, which is currently investigating Hunter Biden’s business schemes.
Hunter’s legal team claimed that the court clerk removed the Amicus Brief from the record on their own accord, but the truth was later discovered when House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Rep. Jason Smith (R-MO) alerted Noreika that someone had made a phone call to the court clerk misrepresenting herself as his attorney.
The judge has since threatened sanctions against Bengels for “misrepresenting… who she worked for in an attempt to improperly convince the Clerk’s Office to remove the amicus materials from the docket.”
In response to Noreika’s threat, Latham and Watkins have attempted to blame the incident on an “unfortunate and unintentional miscommunication between a staff member at our firm and employees of the Court.”
Conservatives have called out Hunter Biden’s legal team for their actions, arguing that this was just the latest “unethical” act by the president’s son that is being swept under the rug.
In a statement to Fox News, Ricketts pointed out the two-tiered system of justice in the United States.
“I’ve heard from countless Americans who are concerned our justice system is being weaponized against President Biden’s political opponents while his son gets preferential treatment,” the Nebraska senator told the outlet.
Ricketts also sent a letter to the bar organizations in both New York and Washington, D.C., about the allegedly illegal actions taken by Bengels — calling for an investigation into potential ethics violations committed by Hunter Biden’s legal team, including Bengels and her supervising attorney Christopher Clark.
“I write to you regarding the apparent unethical conduct of members of the New York State Bar and the District of Columbia Bar… I am asking both the New York Departmental Disciplinary Committee for the First Department and the District of Columbia’s Office of Disciplinary Counsel to take swift action to examine the actions of attorneys Christopher Clark and Jessica L. Bengels,” the letter read.
“Regardless of whether or not it was Ms. Bengels or another staff member at Latham & Watkins who called the clerk, the circumstances surrounding the incident demand an investigation… Therefore, I ask both the New York Departmental Disciplinary Committee for the First Department and the District of Columbia’s Office of Disciplinary Counsel to open investigations into the conduct of both Christopher Clark and Jessica Bengels,” the letter continued.
