Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton (R) has filed a lawsuit against Travis County, alleging that the county violated state law by hiring Civic Government Solutions to assist with voter registration efforts. The lawsuit, filed on Friday, claims that Travis County overstepped its legal bounds by engaging the third-party company to identify unregistered voters.

Paxton also pointed to the CEO of Civic Government Solutions, who has reportedly expressed support for progressive candidates, raising concerns about the impartiality of the registration efforts. In a statement, Paxton said, “Travis County has blatantly violated Texas law by paying partisan actors to conduct unlawful identification efforts.” He added that such programs “reduce public trust in our elections.”

Hector Nieto, spokesperson for Travis County, defended the county’s actions, stating that the outreach was part of their efforts to encourage voter participation and maintain the integrity of the voter registration process. Nieto criticized Paxton for “sowing distrust” in the electoral system.

This lawsuit comes on the heels of a similar legal action filed earlier in the week against Bexar County, where Paxton accused the county of improperly mailing out voter registration forms to residents.

Paxton’s lawsuits have sparked controversy, with some seeing his actions as a defense of election integrity and others viewing them as attempts to suppress voter participation.
