President Donald Trump is ramping up pressure on both Russia and Ukraine to reach a peace deal, threatening new economic sanctions on Moscow while urging both sides to negotiate before the war escalates further.

In a Truth Social post on Friday, Trump signaled his willingness to impose sweeping financial penalties against Russia, including banking sanctions and tariffs, until both sides agree to a cease-fire and formal peace settlement.

“Based on the fact that Russia is absolutely ‘pounding’ Ukraine on the battlefield right now, I am strongly considering large scale Banking Sanctions, Sanctions, and Tariffs on Russia until a Cease Fire and FINAL SETTLEMENT AGREEMENT ON PEACE IS REACHED,” Trump wrote. “To Russia and Ukraine, get to the table right now, before it is too late. Thank you!!!”

Trump’s warning comes amid heightened tensions following a heated exchange with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky at the White House last week. The meeting ended with Zelensky being asked to leave after clashing with Trump over U.S. support.

The Trump administration is also preparing for diplomatic talks, with top aides scheduled to meet Ukrainian officials in Saudi Arabia next week. Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff confirmed that negotiations will focus on a cease-fire framework.

Trump’s approach contrasts with prior U.S. policy, as he applies economic leverage to force an end to the war. His strategy echoes the heavy sanctions once placed on Iran, which targeted companies and nations doing business with the regime. Analysts suggest similar measures against Russia could severely impact its economy, forcing it to reconsider its military campaign.
