Recent polling reveals that a significant portion of federal government employees plan to resist President-elect Donald Trump’s administration. This concerning trend suggests that Trump should seriously consider implementing reforms aimed at limiting bureaucratic obstruction and ensuring his policies are carried out effectively.

According to RMG Research, 42% of federal workers intend to oppose Trump’s agenda. Among Democrat-identifying employees, that number jumps to 73%, highlighting a deeply partisan divide within the federal workforce. Meanwhile, 89% of Republican federal workers, who represent a small minority in Washington, say they support Trump’s policies.

One option Trump could explore is reinstating the Schedule F employment classification, which allows for the reassignment or dismissal of federal employees who obstruct administration directives. This tool could help prevent unelected bureaucrats from interfering with the President’s agenda while encouraging accountability within government agencies.

The data also show a clear disconnect between federal workers and everyday Americans. Main Street Americans — who make up the majority of the country — support Trump’s agenda by 59%, while only 28% favor bureaucratic resistance. In contrast, the political elite, defined as high-income, highly educated urban residents, are more inclined to support opposition within the government.

Federal employees are expected to implement policies set by elected officials, regardless of personal political beliefs. Strengthening accountability measures could help ensure that government operations remain aligned with the will of voters.

If President-elect Trump prioritizes bureaucratic reform, he may reduce internal resistance and improve the government’s ability to function efficiently. Revisiting measures like Schedule F could be a strategic way to ensure that federal employees are working in the interest of the American public.

By taking steps to address this issue early, Trump can focus on delivering his policy goals without unnecessary interference from within the government.
