As Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy shifts from defensive to offensive rhetoric toward Russia, the U.S. should consider demanding greater transparency and accountability for the billions it has invested in Ukraine’s defense. The nation’s handling of the precarious situation at the Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant is particularly crucial, a key concern in the ongoing conflict with Russia.

In a recent CNN interview, Zelenskyy, who ascended to the presidency after an entertainment career, was resolute about reclaiming Crimea. He declared, “There will not be victory there,” without the return of Crimea to Ukraine, emphasizing the unyielding stance of his administration. Russia annexed Crimea in 2014, which was widely condemned by the U.S. and its allies.

His claims that “War is not over yet,” as long as Russia maintains control over Crimea, suggests a clear shift from a defensive to an offensive position, which could escalate the ongoing regional tensions.

The U.S. has been a significant supporter of Ukraine in its fight against Russia, supplying the nation with at least $75 billion in funding and additional direct military aid since the onset of the conflict. However, Zelenskyy’s hawkish stance toward Russia questions the prudence of such vast assistance without substantial accountability or transparency.

The situation at the Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant, Europe’s largest nuclear power facility, encapsulates the pressing need for greater transparency.
