Biden Administration To Announce Legal Status For Long-Term Immigrants
The Biden administration is preparing to unveil a new policy that will grant legal status to hundreds of thousands of immigrants who have lived in the United States for at least ten years. CBS News reports that the plan, called “Parole in Place,” will be announced on Tuesday.
Under this new policy, immigrants who have resided in the U.S. for a decade and are married to American citizens will be eligible for green cards and deportation protection without having to leave the country. This is a departure from current law, which requires these individuals to exit the U.S. before applying for a green card.
Additionally, the administration aims to simplify the application process for DREAMers, including the controversial H-1B visa program. Up to 1.1 million illegal immigrants could benefit from these changes, according to estimates from administration officials.
President Biden’s approach to immigration has been a significant point of contention. Public frustration has grown due to the increasing number of immigrants at the border, a situation exacerbated by the busing program initiated by Texas Governor Greg Abbott. This program has moved immigrants to sanctuary jurisdictions to share the burden of care.
