Second Teen In Car That Purposely Mowed Down Retired Police Chief Arrested
The second teenager involved in the horrific hit-and-run murder of a retired police chief was arrested on Tuesday, according to Las Vegas officials.
On August 14, two teenage boys filmed themselves in a stolen car laughing as they sped up behind 64-year-old retired police chief Andreas “Andy” Probst on his bike — crashing into him and ultimately killing him.
The passenger and driver are both facing murder charges after the video of the disturbing incident was uncovered, officials stated during a Tuesday press conference. The 17-year-old driver was arrested last month.
“It’s a complete lack of conscience on a part of it and the worst part about it in the video is you hear that everything was intentional,” Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department Detective Lieutenant Jason Johansen said during the press conference.
“A cowardly act that in my 22 years of law enforcement left me personally appalled, two juveniles joyriding in a car intentionally hitting and killing an innocent man who was riding a bicycle and leaving him for dead along the side of a road,” Police Deputy Chief Nick Farese added.
Probst was a 35-year law enforcement veteran who retired in 2009 and moved to Las Vegas. His daughter, Taylor Probst, appeared alongside officials during the press conference.
“We are devastated by the senseless murder of Andy,” she said. “Andy’s life was robbed by two individuals who did not believe that lives of others matter.”
“He was a Little League dad, an honorary member of Girl Scouts, and he was always there for the various activities we’d get into as a family. His colleagues remember him as a real-life Pee-wee Herman. He was a jokester, a prankster and always had a way to make you laugh,” she added.
The shocking and graphic video of the incident shows the teenagers speeding up behind Probst while he was on his 6 a.m. bike ride.
“Ready?” the driver can be heard saying to his friend in the passenger seat, who is laughing while filming the entire joyride.
“Yeah, get his a—,” the passenger responds.
The teens then mow down Probst, who is thrown onto the windshield — cracking it and sending glass shards flying as he tumbles over the car and lands on the ground several feet from his bike.
“Damn that n—a got knocked out!” the passenger can be heard saying as they speed away from the scene.
“Oh s—t, we need to get out of here,” the driver says.
According to authorities, this wasn’t the only crime the two teenagers committed that day. During their crime spree, the pair stole at least four cars and hit a 72-year-old man a half hour before killing Probst, leaving the man with non-life-threatening injuries. In the video taken by the teens, they also appear to purposely ram a white car driving in the lane next to them.
The teen driver was arrested last month before the video was unearthed, and thus was only charged with a hit and run. Now, with the new evidence, both teens are facing murder charges — and prosecutors have stated they will both be tried as adults. The video of the incident was uncovered thanks to a student at a local school, who told a school resource officer about the footage. The school resource officer ultimately alerted the police.
