A new CNN poll released Wednesday shows that 67% of Americans disapprove of Joe Biden’s economic policies, with that issue being the most important for voters as the 2024 election season approaches. The economy was ranked as the most important consideration by 42% of respondents. Only 35% agreed that Biden is “helping the middle class.”

The poll result illustrates the growing toxicity of the political slogan “Bidenomics,” which Democrats are now running away from.

The poll was conducted throughout November and surveyed around 1,800 respondents. The results show that Biden’s approval rating has fallen 33%. The highest mark Biden has received was 49% back in March 2021, shortly after he assumed office.

Dana Bash of CNN observed, “The White House is trying so hard with Bidenomics. It’s like, you have, they’re trying to tell people how to feel, and it doesn’t always work.”

As Biden’s performance on handling the economy spirals downward, there has been a noticeable shift in Democratic rhetoric, with leading party members and organizations like the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee and House Majority PAC distancing themselves from the “Bidenomics” tag. This change in messaging strategy follows reports that the term is seen as “ineffective” and “tone-deaf,” particularly in light of the economic struggles still faced by many Americans.

Meanwhile, when Joe Biden has bothered to address the economy publicly recently, he also appears to recognize the disconnect. NBC News reported that Biden “hasn’t used ‘Bidenomics’ in public remarks since November 1,” indicating a strategic shift away from a phrase set to backfire as ordinary Americans struggle with rising prices and stagnant wages. According to reporting from Axios, the Democratic Party has decided internally to move to a new slogan, “People Over Politics,” as a replacement for “Bidenomics.”

Republicans, including new House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA), have already used the term as a campaign bullet point against Democrats. Johnson recently said, “‘Bidenomics’ is costing all Americans.” Republicans are sure to tap into the financial frustration Americans are feeling nationwide, as further shown by a Fox News poll published last month, which found that 78% of voters rate the economy negatively.
